Final Project

In my painting, I used color and shape to create movement. I utilized the entire picture plane with organic and geometric shapes, as well as convex and concave shapes. The painting is asymmetrical because no two things are alike within the design. I created a focal point using color contrast, and because of the repetition and flow of the colors and their gradual saturation and desaturation, I was able to create a visual flow throughout the painting. The focal point adheres to the rule of thirds and it is found in the bottom righthand corner of the painting. I chose to paint this area a completely saturated yellow, and a completely saturated purple, side by side so that the contrast would be noticed at first glance. I painted some other shapes in the work these same colors to prevent the viewer from focusing only on the one focal point. Because of this, they will first focus on the one point and then their eyes will draw to the other colors in the painting that match these ones, giving them the chance to see it as a whole. There is much depth within this painting, and I was able to do that with different intensities and combinations of complementary colors. The painting has a mostly warm feel but gives off a sort of melancholy vibe in some areas.

Before creating this, I didn’t really have any specific emotion in mind. I was thinking more of the specific colors and how they would work together. While this painting is mostly warm because of the yellows, reds, and oranges, it also gives off a slightly sickening feeling. The combinations of the complementary colors tend to create a more “putrid” variety of colors, and so this does give the painting a different feel. I also used some cool colors, and that also has something to do with it.

I feel that my design is successful because it combines several colors and their compliments, giving the painting a relatable feeling as your eyes move from one corner to the next. This design demonstrates an understanding of all the Principles of Organization. The negative spaces were turned into shapes just like the positive spaces. I created emphasis, harmony, balance, contrast, and repetition with colors, and somewhat of a directional dominance in different areas using precise placement of shapes. This painting is overall very successful with its use of complementary colors, intensity, and temperature. The craftsmanship is outstanding, and you can see the attention to detail.

This is a non-representational composition with dynamic qualities. I have used every part of the picture plane while also utilizing all of the materials properly to create a strong directional dominance. I measured and mounted this on Bristol Board and the craftsmanship is on point.

Facebook: The All-Seeing Eye (in conclusion)

I always find myself joking about how if I were to lock my phone in my closet and drive down the street, “Big Brother” would still somehow know what I was thinking. More times than not, while scrolling through Facebook, advertisements for things only I could know about will pop up on my phone and leave me wondering how the heck Facebook knows these little details about my life.

Well, I guess I’m not so crazy after all, for feeling like my life is under constant surveillance. It is, and yours is, too.
